Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the provisions of Section 10 Chapter 504 of the Acts of 1966
be and they are hereby waived insofar as they impose a time for
placing under contract the items in Section 5 (H) (1) (b) and (c)
in said Chapter 504 of the Acts of 1966, making available Seventy-
six Thousand Seven Hundred Dollars ($76,700.00) for a State
Branch Laboratory and State mental health clinical space as part
of a new Wicomico County Health Center, and Seventy-six Thou-
sand Dollars ($76,000.00) for a State Branch Laboratory as part
of a new Montgomery County Health Center. With the waiver of
these provisions so applied to this item, there shall be allowed an
additional period of two years, beginning on the effective date of
this Act, for placing these projects under contract, and after this
two-year period the provisions of Section 10 of said Chapter shall
be fully effective and applied to this item.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act is hereby
declared to be an emergency measure and necessary for the imme-
diate preservation of the public health and safety, and having been
passed by a yea and nay vote supported by three-fifths of the mem-
bers elected to each of the two houses of the General Assembly,
the same shall take effect from the date of its passage.

(House Bill 884)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37 (x) of
Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1964 Replacement
Volume and 1967 Supplement), title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Compen-
sation and Duties," to provide for an allowance for expenses for
each of the deputy sheriffs of Baltimore City.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37 (x) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1964 Replacement Volume and 1967 Supplement), title "Sheriffs,"
subtitle "Compensation and Duties," be and it is hereby repealed
and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:
37.
(x) In Baltimore City, the Sheriff shall receive an annual salary
of $16,000.00. He shall appoint an under-sheriff and chief deputy
at an annual salary of $11,000, one writ clerk and four assistant
writ clerks at an annual salary of $7,500, one stenographer and
docket clerk at an annual salary of $6,300, two clerks at an annual
salary of $4,500 and thirty-nine deputy sheriffs at annual salaries
of $7,000 each. and annual expense allowances of $1,000 each for
such deputy sheriffs, and EACH DEPUTY SHALL RECEIVE A
REGULAR EXPENSE ALLOTMENT OF $50.00 PER MONTH.
ANY DEPUTY SHERIFF WHO USES HIS PERSONAL AUTOMO-
BILE SHALL BE ENTITLED TO A MONTHLY AUTOMOBILE
