(House Joint Resolution 39)
House Joint Resolution to request the appointment of a Guberna-
torial Commission to study the need for the establishment of an
Archive of Maryland Folklife.
Whereas, the State of Maryland is fortunate to have a diversity
of folklife and geography ranging from the mountains of Western
Maryland to the tidewater of the Eastern Shore encompassing truly
America in Miniature; and
Whereas, the State of Maryland has recognized the need for the
preservation of our history and antiquity by the creation of the
Maryland Historical Trust and the Maryland Environmental Trust,
it must now move to preserve and record the folklife of the State; and
Whereas, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and other states
have passed enabling legislation to establish an Ethnic Cultural
Survey to collect, organize and publish information on folk life, and
Whereas, the report of the Legislative Council's Committee on
Tourism on November 15,1967, clearly recognizes the immediate and
desperate need of preserving our past culture not only for the
benefit of tourism but of even greater importance so that we will
not lose the beauty, the culture, the greatness of Maryland; now
therefore, be it
Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the Governor
of Maryland is requested to appoint a "Commission for the Preser-
vation of Maryland Folklife" the members of which shall be composed
of not more than 15 persons and of that number there shall be repre-
sentatives from the State Department of Economic Development,
State Department of Forests and Parks, Maryland Historical Trust,
Maryland Environmental Trust, Maryland Historical Society, the
Baltimore Museum, and such other persons who would manifest by
education, training or inclination an ability to serve on the Com-
mission, for the purpose of studying the following problems.
(1) The need for both a regional and central archive for the
preservation of Maryland Folklife.
(2) The need to coordinate all state, local and municipal agencies,
societies, educational facilities, and other institutions and persons
toward the preservation of Maryland Folklife,
(3) The need that such findings be of a permanent nature.
Resolved, That the Governor is requested to make such funds
available to the Commission as may be necessary for the implemen-
