The Sheriff of Howard County shall receive an annual salary of

$7,200. He shall appoint one deputy who shall receive an annual

salary of [fifty eight hundred dollars ($5,800)] seven thousand
dollars ($7,000) and he shall also appoint an additional [two] three
deputies at an annual salary of [five thousand dollars ($5,000) and
a third additional deputy, who shall receive an annual salary of four
thousand dollars ($4,000)] six thousand five hundred dollars ($6,500),
SUCH ADDITIONAL DEPUTIES AS MAY BE AUTHORIZED
BY THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF HOWARD COUNTY.
AFTER JULY 1, 1968, THE COMPENSATION OF SUCH DEPU-
TIES SHALL BE DETERMINED BY THE COUNTY COMMIS-
SIONERS OF HOWARD COUNTY all all of whom ALL SUCH DEPU-
TIES shall hold office at the pleasure of the Sheriff and may be
removed at any time the Sheriff may elect, or by the Circuit
Court for Howard County upon indictment and conviction as provided
by law. The County Commissioners may prescribe and provide for
the payment of the traveling and other expenses of the Sheriff and
said deputies. The County Commissioners may prescribe and pro-
vide for the payment of the traveling and other expenses of the Sheriff
and his deputies. The Sheriff may also appoint temporarily such
additional deputy sheriffs as he may deem necessary for the public
safety and the County Commissioners shall allow reasonable com-
pensation for same, but such deputies shall not serve longer than the
case actually warrants.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1968.
