be in charge of the office of the County Commissioners, shall
perform the duties pertaining to his office and such other duties as
may be prescribed by the County Commissioners or imposed by law,
and shall have full power to administer an oath or affirmation to any
and all persons who are to be examined as witnesses in any matter
before the County Commissioners, and touching or relating to any
account, bill or other matter to be filed in the office of said County
Commissioners. Said Clerk shall receive an annual salary not to
exceed [Three] Five Thousand [Six Hundred] Dollars
[($3,600.00)] ($5,000.00), payable monthly. The Clerk shall per-
form all the duties of his office without any additional help. The
office of the Clerk shall be kept open from 9 A. M. until 12 noon, and
from 1 P.M. until 4 P.M. daily, except Sunday.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1967.

CHAPTER 290
(House Bill 774)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37 (k)
of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1964 Replace-
ment Volume and 1966 Supplement), title "Sheriffs," subtitle
"Compensation and Duties," to provide for an additional deputy
sheriff in Garrett County and to raise the: salaries of the deputy
sheriffs to $3,900 AND TO INCREASE THE EXPENSE AL-
LOWANCE OF THE SHERIFF.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37(k) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1964 Replacement Volume and 1966 Supplement), title
"Sheriffs," subtitle "Compensation and Duties," be and it is hereby
repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:
37.
(k) The Sheriff of Garrett County shall receive an annual
salary of $2,000 and on and after January 1, 1959, an annual salary
of $4,000 and such sum as may be set from time to time in the
discretion of the County Commissioners, for expenses. He shall
appoint [two] three deputies, each of whom shall receive an annual
salary of three thousand [three] nine hundred dollars [($3,300)]
($3,900) and one of who shall act as warden of the jail. The Sheriff
shall be allowed extra car mileage and out-of-county mileage at the
rate of ten cents per mile. He shall be allowed one dollar AND
TWENTY-FIVE CENTS per day for boarding each prisoner com-
mitted to the county jail. He may appoint a cook for said jail who
shall receive a salary of $100 per month.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1967.
