Article where the amount or thing in controversy shall be Twenty-
Five Hundred Dollars ($2500) or less and shall exceed [Five Hun-
dred Dollars ($500)] One Thousand Dollars ($1,000). In any cause
of action enumerated in this subsection (b) any defendant desiring
trial by jury shall have the right to have the cause transferred to
any one of the aforesaid law courts, but in the absence of designa-
tion to the Baltimore City Court, upon such terms for costs and
formal pleading as may be prescribed by rule of the People's Court
and the Supreme Bench of Baltimore City.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1967.

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37 (m)
of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1964 Replace-
ment Volume and 1966 Supplement), title "Sheriffs," subtitle
"Compensation and Duties," to provide an additional deputy sheriff
for Howard County, and his salary.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37 (m) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1964 Replacement Volume and 1966 Supplement), title "Sheriffs,"
subtitle "Compensation and Duties," be and it is hereby repealed and
re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:
37.
(m) The Sheriff of Howard County shall receive an annual salary
of $7,200. He shall appoint one deputy who shall receive an annual
salary of fifty-eight hundred dollars ($5,800) and he shall also
appoint an additional two deputies at an annual salary of five thou-
sand dollars ($5,000) and a third additional deputy, who shall receive
an annual salary of four thousand dollars ($4,000), all of whom shall
hold office at the pleasure of the Sheriff and be removed at any time
the Sheriff may elect, or by the Circuit Court for Howard County
upon indictment and conviction as provided by law. The County
Commissioners may prescribe and provide for the payment of the
traveling and other expenses of the Sheriff and said deputies. The
Sheriff may also appoint temporarily such additional deputy sheriffs
as he may deem necessary for the public safety and the County Com-
missioners shall allow reasonable compensation for same, but such
deputies shall not serve longer than the case actually warrants.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1967.
