CHAPTER 424
(House Bill 978)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37(u) of
Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1964 Replacement
Volume), title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Compensation and Duties," to
increase the salary of the Sheriff of Washington County.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37(u) of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1964 Re-
placement Volume), title "Sheriffs, subtitle "Compensation and
Duties," be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amend-
ments, to read as follows:
37.
(u) The Sheriff of Washington County shall receive an annual
salary of [$6,500] $7,500. He may appoint an office deputy at an
annual salary to be set by the County Commissioners of Washington
County; and two deputies who shall each receive an annual salary
of at least $2,400 and $50 per month each for the use of their auto-
mobiles; one secretary who shall receive an annual salary of $1,800;
a chief warden of the jail, who shall receive an annual salary of at
least $2,400; an assistant warden who shall receive an annual salary
of at least $2,100; an attorney to the Sheriff who shall receive annual
compensation in the amount of $600; and a cook who shall receive
at least $1,800 per year. The Sheriff may appoint such additional
special deputies as he may deem necessary with the approval of the
County Commissioners as to number and compensation. The salaries
specified hereinabove in this subsection except as to the Sheriff,
shall be deemed to be minimum salaries and may be increased from
time to time by the County Commissioners of Washington County.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the provisions of this Act
shall not apply to the sheriff in office on July 1, 1966, but shall to the
next term of office.
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1,1966.

CHAPTER 425
(House Bill 1088)
AN ACT to repeal Section 8A of Chapter 743 of the Acts of the
General Assembly of 1965, and to enact a new Section 8A in lieu
thereof, to stand in the place of the Section 8A so repealed, to
amend the 1965 General Construction Loan to generally provide
for the effect of available federal funds on the several amounts
allocated to State agencies and departments in the 1965 State
capital improvements program, and for the possible expansion of
the scope of projects of the Department of Forests and Parks
where federal funds are allocated.
