AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37(t)
of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition),
title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Compensation and Duties," increasing
the compensation of the Sheriff of Talbot County and providing
for the effect of this Act.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37 (t) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1957 Edition), title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Compensation and Du-
ties," be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments,
to read as follows:
37.
(t) In Talbot County the Sheriff shall receive an annual salary
of [$5,500] $6,500 and he may receive no other money or com-
pensation, directly or indirectly, from the county or any other po-
litical subdivision. He may appoint, subject to the approval of the
County Commissioners of the county, such deputies as he may deem
necessary and at such compensation as the County Commissioners
of the county may fix prior to such appointment. These shall be
continuing powers. Provided further that in Talbot County there
shall always be night personnel attached to the Sheriff's office and
the office shall be operated on a 24-hour daily basis.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That nothing in this Act shall
be construed or applied to affect the compensation of the Sheriff of
Talbot County who is in office on the effective date of this Act, for
the remainder of the term in which he then is serving. The in-
creased compensation provided in this Act shall take effect as of
the beginning of the term of the Sheriff of Talbot County who is
elected to that position at the regular election in the month of
November, 1966.
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1966.
