cut and remove such briars, undergrowth, bushes and weeds in the
same manner as debts of like amounts are recoverable.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1,1966.

(House Bill 333)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 59 of
Article 27 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1965 Supplement),
title and subtitle "Crimes and Punishments," subheading "Cruelty
to Animals," to increase the penalties for the offense of cruelty to
animals.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 59 of Article 27 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1965 Supplement), title and subtitle "Crimes and Punishments," sub-
heading "Cruelty to Animals," be and it is hereby repealed and re-
enacted, with amendments, and to read as follows:
59.
Any person who wilfully sets foot, instigates, engages in, or in any
way furthers any act of cruelty to any animal, or any act tending to
produce such cruelty, or by any act, conduct, neglect or omission wil-
fully causes, permits or suffers any animal to undergo any species of
torture or cruelty, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and shall
be punished by a fine not exceeding [$100.00] $1,000.00, or by im-
prisonment not to exceed [90 days] one year, or both.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1966.

CHAPTER 334
(House Bill 456)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37(o) (2)
of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1964 Supple-
ment) (1964 REPLACEMENT VOLUME AND 1965 SUPPLE-
MENT), title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Montgomery County," "COM-
PENSATION AND DUTIES," to make deputy sheriffs in
Montgomery County subject to budget limitations and regulations
of the County Personnel Board and to provide for the election by
deputies appointed prior to June 1, 1966, to serve subject to this
amendment or subject to prior law.
