as obtained through examination and shall receive such salary scales
as set by the Standard Salary Board.

The Commissioner is authorized and empowered to appoint or
employ such deputies, inspectors, assistants and employees of every
kind as may be necessary for the performance of the duties now or
hereafter imposed upon him by this or any other law; provided,
however, that such appointments and employments shall in each and
every case be subject to the approval of the Governor and the com-
pensation to be allowed therefor, be subject to the approval of the
Standard Salary Board.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1,1966.

CHAPTER 315
(House Bill 1198)

AN ACT to add new Section 10A to Article 27 of the Annotated Code
of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Crimes and Punishments," sub-
title "Arson and Burning," to follow immediately after Section 10
thereof, to provide it shall be unlawful to burn a cross or other
religious symbols on any private or public property in Maryland,
without consent of the owner and without notice to the fire depart-
ment and to provide penalties for violations thereof.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That new Section 10A be and that it is hereby added to Article 27
of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Crimes
and Punishments," subtitle "Arson and Burning," to follow imme-
diately after Section 10 thereof, and to read as follows:

10 A.

It shall be unlawful for any person or persons to burn or cause to
be burned any cross or other religious symbol upon any private or
public property within this State without the express consent of the
owner of such property and without first giving notice to the fire de-
partment which services the area in which such burning is to take
place. Any person or persons who violates the provisions of this
section shall, upon conviction, be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor
and shall suffer punishment by imprisonment in the county or Balti-
more City Jail for a period not to exceed 90 days or shall be fined an
amount not to exceed $500.00 or shall suffer both such fine and im-
prisonment in the discretion of the court.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1966.
