(House Bill 729)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 7-41 (a)
of the Code of Public Local Laws of Baltimore County (1958
Edition, being Article 3 of the Code of Public Local Laws of
Maryland), title "Baltimore County," subtitle "Courts, Fines,
Forfeitures and Imprisonment," subheading "Article II. People's
Court," to provide for an increase in the exclusive jurisdiction of
the People's Court of Baltimore County and to provide for a con-
current jurisdiction with the Circuit Court for Baltimore County.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 7-41 (a) of the Code of Public Local Laws of Baltimore-
County (1958 Edition, being Article 3 of the Code of Public Local
Laws of Maryland), title "Baltimore County," subtitle "Courts,
Fines, Forfeitures and Imprisonment," subheading "Article II. Peo-
ple's Court," be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amend-
ments, to read as follows:

7-41.

(a) The people's court of the county shall have exclusive original
jurisdiction at law in all civil cases arising in the county, including
all cases for the enforcement of contracts, to obtain redress for
wrongs, in actions of replevin and attachments as provided in Article
9 of the Annotated Code of Maryland, 1957, where the debt or dam-
ages claimed or the amount in controversy does not exceed [five
hundred dollars,] one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) and shall have
concurrent jurisdiction with the Circuit Court of Baltimore County
up to and including the sum of two thousand five hundred dollars
($2,500.00), provided, that the defendant in any civil case shall have
the right to removal to the Circuit Court, upon motion, where the
amount involved exceeds one thousand dollars ($1,000.00),
and cases
between landlord and tenant arising under Article 53 of the Anno-
tated Code of Maryland, 1957, and title 16 of this Code, and all
civil cases arising in the county over which justices of the peace and
trial magistrates had jurisdiction prior to June 6, 1955.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1966.
