ment), title "Attorneys at Law and Attorneys in Fact," subtitle
"State's Attorney," to provide an increase in the salary of the
State's Attorney for Howard County and to create a position and
salary for a Deputy State's Attorney.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 40 (n) of Article 10 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1965 Supplement), title "Attorneys at Law and Attorneys in Fact,"
subtitle "State's Attorney," be and it is hereby repealed and re-
enacted, with amendments, and to read as follows:
40.
(n) (1) The State's Attorney's salary is height thousand five
hundred dollars ($8,500).] ten thousand dollars ($10,000).
[2] (2) The State's Attorney may appoint a Deputy State's At-
torney, to serve at the pleasure of the State's Attorney. The Deputy
State's Attorney's salary is six thousand dollars ($6,000.00). He has
the same legal powers as the State's Attorney to represent the State
before the grand jury and at the trial of criminal proceedings.
(3) The State's Attorney may appoint an assistant State's at-
torney, to serve at the pleasure of the State's Attorney. The as-
sistant State's attorney's salary is four thousand five hundred dollars
($4,500). He has the same legal powers as the State's Attorney to
represent the State before the grand jury and at the trial of criminal
proceedings.
[3] (4) The County Commissioners shall provide the State's
Attorney with an appropriate office and such stenographic and secre-
tarial services as may be necessary.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1966.

AN ACT to add new Sections 461A through 461H, inclusive, to the
Code of Public Local Laws of Harford County (1965 Edition,
being Article 13 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland),
title "Harford County," to follow immediately after Section 461
thereof, and to be under the new subtitle "Public Defender," to
create the Office of Public Defender for Harford County and to
establish duties, qualifications, method of appointment, salary, and
responsibilities of the office and to provide defense or representa-
tion for indigent persons in certain criminal litigations.
