(a) The Office of Sheriff of Charles County consists of:
(1) The Sheriff and deputy sheriffs as authorized by Article 87,
Section 37(h).
(2) The Board of Public Safety.
(3) Such other employees as are authorized by public general or
public local law.
(b) The office of the Sheriff is located at LaPlata. It shall use the
facilities of the Court House at La Plata for the establishment of its
office and the Board of County Commissioners are authorized to con-
struct or acquire any other facilities for the use of the Sheriff.
(c)(1) The Board of Public Safety is composed of three members,
all of whom are residents of Charles County for two years prior to
their membership. One of the members is one of the County Commis-
sioners of Charles County appointed by the Board and the other two
members are by the Governor with the advice and consent of the
Senate of Maryland from a list of names submitted to him by the
County Commissioners. , THE SECOND IS APPOINTED BY THE
CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE FROM CHARLES COUNTY AND THE
THIRD IS APPOINTED BY A MAJORITY OF THE REPRESEN-
TATIVES OF CHARLES COUNTY TO THE STATE LEGISLA-
TURE. If any names submitted are rejected, the County Commis-
sioners shall submit additional lists of names. The members of the
Board shall serve for six years except that the member from the
Board of County Commissioners shall serve from the time of his
appointment until the following election for the Board of County
Commissioners. Of those members first appointed by the Governor
one shall serve for four years and one shall serve for six years and
thereafter they shall serve for six years each. The members of the
Board shall be allowed as compensation the sum of fifteen dollars
($15.00) per day plus expenses for each day that they are engaged
in their official duties. The appointive members shall be removable
at any time by the Governor for good cause shown.
(2) The Board shall appoint an experienced physician to serve as
Medical Examiner. It shall be the duty of the Medical Examiner to ex-
amine all applicants for appointment as a deputy sheriff as to their
physical and mental qualifications. The Medical Examiner shall be
paid on the basis of his professional services rendered, and shall be
removed by the County Commissioners only for cause and after a
hearing.
(3) The members of the Board shall be empowered to employ such
administrative assistance as may be necessary to administer their
office. All vacancies on the Board shall be filled by the Governor for
any unexpired terms. IN THE SAME MANNER AS THE INITIAL
APPOINTMENT. The members of the Board shall take an oath to
faithfully perform their duties.
(4) The appointment of deputy sheriffs and other employees shall
be made by the Board after such mental and physical examination as
the Board may by rule deem sufficient. All applicants shall be be-
tween the age of 21 and 45. and have had at least five years experi-
