(2) The State's Attorney may appoint an assistant State's at-
torney, to serve at the pleasure of the State's Attorney. The assistant
State's attorney's salary is three thousand dollars ($3,000). He has
the same legal powers as the State's Attorney to represent the State
before the grand jury and at the trial of criminal proceedings.
(3) The County Commissioners shall provide the State's Attorney
with an appropriate office and such stenographic and secretarial
services as may be necessary.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall not affect
the salary of the State's Attorney of Howard County during the
term of office existing on the effective date of this Act.
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That subject to the provisions
of Section 2, this Act shall take effect June 1, 1965.

CHAPTER 523
(Senate Bill 487)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37 (m) of
Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1964 Replacement
Volume), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties",
increasing the salary of the sheriff of Howard County.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37 (m) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1964 Replacement Volume), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Com-
pensation and Duties", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted,
with amendments, to read as follows:
37.
(m) The Sheriff of Howard County shall receive an annual salary
of [$5,000] $7,200. He shall appoint two deputies who shall receive
an annual salary of $4,500 each and who shall hold office at the
pleasure of the Sheriff and be removed at any time the Sheriff may
elect, or by the Circuit Court for Howard County upon indictment
and conviction as provided by law. The County Commissioners may
prescribe and provide for the payment of the traveling and other
expenses of the Sheriff and said deputies. The Sheriff may also
appoint temporarily such additional deputy sheriffs as he may deem
necessary for the public safety and the County Commissioners shall
allow reasonable compensation for same, but such deputies shall not
serve longer than the case actually warrants.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the provisions of this
Act shall not be construed to extend or apply to the sheriff in office
on the effective date of this Act, but the provisions of this Act shall
take effect with the next term of office.
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1965.
