one additional temporary assistant State's attorney whose term of
office shall expire December 31, 1966.] The deputy State's attorney
and the four assistant State's attorneys shall devote their full time
and attention to the duties of their offices and shall not engage in the
private practice of law at any time in any jurisdiction during their
tenure of office.

(p) (3) The State's Attorney, [and the deputy State's attorney,
or either of them] the deputy State's attorney and the assistant
State's attorneys, or any of them,
shall present cases to the grand
jury and perform such other acts and duties in relation to the
grand jury as are necessary and proper. [The salaries of the State's
Attorney and of the deputy and assistant State's attorneys include
such services as any of them perform before or in behalf of the
judges of the Circuit Court, justices of the peace or judges of the
People's Court of the county in preliminary hearings or trials in
criminal cases.]

(p)(4) The State's Attorney may appoint four clerks, at such
salary as may be fixed by the County Council.

(p) (5) The State's Attorney may appoint a special investigator,
who shall be directly under the supervision of the State's Attorney
and perform such duties as the State's Attorney may designate from
time to time. The special investigator's salary shall be not less than
[six thousand dollars ($6,000)] seven thousand dollars ($7,000) nor
more than nine thousand dollars ($9,000) to be determined
[and this
compensation may be increased] by the County Council in its dis-
cretion. The special investigator shall devote his full time and at-
tention to his duties as special investigator and shall not engage in
other employment during the time he is employed as special investi-
gator without the specific written permission of the State's Attorney.

(P) (6) IN ADDITION TO THE COMPENSATION PROVIDED
FOR IN THIS SECTION, THE STATE'S ATTORNEY, FOR THE
OPERATION OF HIS OFFICE AND THE PERFORMANCE OF
HIS DUTIES SHALL BE ENTITLED TO A REASONABLE EX-
PENSE ALLOWANCE WHICH SHALL BE SUBJECT TO THE
APPROVAL OF THE COUNTY COUNCIL.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
on January 1, 1967.

(House Bill 552)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37 (o)
(1) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957
Edition and 1964 Replacement Volume), title "Sheriffs," subtitle
"Compensation and Duties," to provide for an increase in the
sheriff's annual salary from $7,500 per year to $12,000 per year.
