J. MILLARD TAWES, Governor                     1621

State of Virginia and to Congressman Harris B. McDowell of the
State of Delaware, all under the great seal of the State of Maryland.

Approved May 4, 1965.

No. 15
(Senate Joint Resolution 25)

Senate Joint Resolution honoring the 27th annual "I Am an Ameri-
can Day, Constitution Day and Maryland Defenders' Day," and
also honoring those responsible for these patriotic demonstrations.

The 27th annual "I Am an American Day, Constitution Day and
Maryland Defenders' Day" parade will be celebrated in the City of
Baltimore on Sunday, September 12, 1965, in the eastern section
of Baltimore City.

This patriotic demonstration is expected to exceed all previous
ones, both in attendance and participants, and these parades have
been the largest in the history of Baltimore.

The world is seeking solutions to peaceful co-existence, and these
demonstrators exemplify the American way of life by all peoples
of every faith, color and creed, their ancestors having originated
from every place on the globe, join hands here in proclaiming "I
Am an American".

This tremendous outpouring of patriotism was made possible
only through the outstanding efforts and cooperation of the Hearst
Newspapers in accordance with an act of Congress, setting aside
one day each year to pay tribute to our American way of life. This
"I Am an American Day" celebration is the brain-child of Mr. William
Randolph Hearst, Sr., whose son William Randolph Hearst, Jr.,
is now following through.

Reviewing these annual parades have been officials from through-
out the world who witness our people in Baltimore at work and
play, cooperating with each other in displaying American solidarity
as it should be; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That this Resolu-
tion is passed honoring the memory of Mr. William Randolph Hearst,
Sr., and pays tribute to those responsible for these patriotic demon-
strations; Mr. Mark Collins, Publisher of the News American; Mr.
Sterling Noel, Managing Editor; Mr. Aldine R. Bird, Radio and
Television Editor; and Mr. Paul E. Burke, who has been the
General Chairman of the parade for the past 26 years; and be it
further

Resolved, That the General Assembly of Maryland hopes that once
again a brilliant chapter will be added to the history of Baltimore,
which has long been noted for these patriotic demonstrations, and
that over 35,000 will participate in this year's celebration and well
over a half million will witness the parade in east Baltimore, which
will undoubtedly be the longest and most spectacular of all.

Approved May 4, 1965.
