1162                              LAWS OF MARYLAND                       [CH. 754

Beginning for the academic year 1966-67 and thereafter, one stu-
dent from each senatorial district of the State, appointed according
to the provisions of Section 282 of this article, shall be educated by
the School free of charge for tuition, room and board.

Sec. 5. And be it further enacted, That new Section 283A be and
it is hereby added to Article 77 of the Code, title "Public Education",
sub-title "Chapter 27. Free Scholarships", said new Section to follow
immediately after Section 283 thereof and to read as follows:

283A.

No appointee to a Senatorial scholarship who is otherwise eligible
to receive said scholarship shall be denied admission to one of the
participating institutions because he is a member of a particular
religious sect; nor shall he be required to take sectarian religious
courses in order to qualify for a degree.

Sec. 6. And be it further enacted, That a new Section 284 be
and it is hereby added to Article 77 of the Code, title "Public Educa-
tion", sub-title "Chapter 27. Free Scholarships", said new Section to
follow immediately after Section 283A thereof as hereby enacted and
to read as follows:

284.

Nothing contained in this sub-title shall be so construed as to deny
the right of any college or institution participating in a program of
State scholarships under the provisions of this chapter to withdraw
from such participation at its discretion. The appropriate authorities
of any college or institution wishing to exercise this right shall do so
by notifying the State Scholarship Board of their intention to this
effect at least one month before the date established by the State
Scholarship Board for the holding of the competitive examination
referred to in sub-section (d) of Section 282 of this article. The State
Scholarship Board shall then notify all applicants and appointing
authorities that no appointments may be made on the basis of that
examination to scholarships in the program for the withdrawing in-
stitution. Provided that any student appointed to a scholarship on the
basis of an examination held prior to such notification shall be entitled
to receive that scholarship according to the terms of the original ap-
pointment.

Sec. 7. And be it further enacted, That Sections 284A and 284B
of Article 77 of the Code, title "Public Education", sub-title "Chap-
ter 27. Free Scholarships", be and they are hereby repealed and re-
enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

284 A.

The [Attorney General] State Scholarship Board shall compile and
periodically review and investigate the surety bonds given by persons
accepting scholarships [in education] under any of the provisions of
this sub-title or elsewhere in this article, giving security that such
persons Will teach in the public schools of this State for not less than
two years (or any other specified period) after leaving the institution.
Upon the failure or refusal of any such person to observe the condi-
tions of the bond, by teaching for a less period than stipulated to or
for no period at all, the State Scholarship Board, with the advice and
