1964] OF THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES 19
song being sung—a song whose strains fill our hearts with pride and joy
whenever we hear it.
And so, as I have said, I think it is most appropriate that Americans
everywhere, and especially we Marylanders, honor on this sesqui-centennial,
this magnificent gesture in human history.
This flag, and the song written about it, so symbolic of our own
freedom on that day in 1814, have since that time become the symbols of
the free and the brave throughout the world.
In the words of the poet, "Oh, Thus be it ever ......."
Let me conclude by saying again that I appreciate the courtesy and
the honor I have received here this morning. Let us all strive endlessly
to preserve the deep meaning and significance of the Star-Spangled
Banner—the Song and the Flag.
