1964]                                 OF THE SENATE                                    29

INTRODUCTION OF RESOLUTION

Senate Resolution No. 1—By Senator James:

Senate Resolution expressing deepest regret over the passing of the
Honorable Hooper S. Miles.

The members of the Senate of Maryland learned with very deep
regret of the passing of the Honorable Hooper S. Miles of Baltimore

City.

Mr. Miles served as State Treasurer from 1935 to 1963. In his
private life, he was Chairman of the Board of the Maryland National
Bank. He was a distinguished and outstanding citizen of the State
of Maryland and took a leading and active part in the business,
commercial, social, and political life of the State.

A native of the Eastern Shore, Mr. Miles began his career as a
lawyer in Salisbury, and served as the city solicitor from 1925 to
1932.

Prior to being elected State Treasurer in 1935, he served as a
member of the State Banking Commission and was 1934 chairman
of the State Democratic campaign committee.

Meanwhile, he had become president of the twenty-one banks of the
Eastern Shore Trust Company. In 1937 he resigned that post to
become a director and executive vice president of the Baltimore
National Bank.

He was elected chairman of the board and chief executive officer
in 1948, and in 1961 the firm became the Maryland National Bank.

Mr. Miles was active on numerous public and civic commissions the
most recent of which was the Metropolitan Area Study Commission,
which was appointed by Governor Tawes to make preliminary studies
on a metropolitan government for Baltimore city and surrounding
counties.

He was also a member of the Maryland Judicial Selection Com-
mittee, a director of the finance committee of the Maryland Historical
Society, a trustee of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, and a member of
the Advisory Development Committee of Loyola College.

In his passing, the State of Maryland lost one of its truly out-
standing citizens; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate of Maryland, That the deepest regrets of
this body be expressed over the passing of the Honorable Hooper S.
Miles, and be it further

Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate be instructed to send
copies of this Resolution to the surviving family of the late Mr. Miles.

Read and adopted.
