CHAPTER 355
(Senate Bill 447)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 111 of
Article 77 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition),
title "Public Education", sub-title "Teachers Retirement System",
increasing the pensions of teachers who taught in the Washington
County schools for at least twenty years, one year of which was
prior to 1931.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 111 of Article 77 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1957 Edition), title "Public Education", sub-title "Teachers Retire-
ment System", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with
amendments, to read as follows:
111. Any person who—
(1) Shall have been a teacher in the public schools of this State
for an aggregate period of twenty-five (25) years or more prior to
June 1, 1927, and who, in the case of Caroline County, shall have
been a teacher for a period of twenty (20) years or more prior to
June 1, 1927; and who, in the case of Washington and Frederick
counties, shall have been a teacher, whether a day, night or substitute
teacher, or a clerk, and whether at the same time or at different
times, for a period of twenty (20) years or more prior to July 1,
1931; and who
(2) Shall be ineligible for a pension under this sub-title; and who
(3) Shall be at least sixty (60) years of age; and
(4) Whose record as such teacher shall be without reproach; and
who
(5) Shall be unable to teach school because of physical disability
or infirmity shall receive a pension, of seven hundred and twenty
dollars ($720.00) per annum, payable quarterly, from the county
commissioners of the county in which the teacher has taught, ex-
cept that in the case of Washington County, the County Commis-
sioners are directed to pay a pension of fifty dollars ($50.00) a month
to any such teacher who shall have taught for more than twenty
and up to twenty-five years, [and] $60.00 a month to any such
teacher who shall have taught for twenty-five years or more [.] , and
$150.00 a month to any teacher, who taught for more than twenty
years, any year of which was prior to 1931. Provision for the pay-
ment of said pensions shall be made in the next annual tax levy
and in all future tax levies of said counties.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1963.
