cant for proper purposes] properly authorized person a certified
copy or an abridged copy of [any] a birth or death certificate regis-
tered under the provisions of this sub-title or of the record of a
marriage received pursuant to the provisions of Section 18 of Article
62 of this Code. The Commissioner of Health of Baltimore City
[may] shall upon request furnish any [applicant for proper pur-
poses] properly authorized person a certified copy or an abridged
copy of [any] a birth or death [record] certificate registered by him
[under authority of the State Board of Health as provided in]
according to the provisions of Section 14 (b) (3) of this [article]
sub-title.
(b) A certified copy of a birth certificate shall be issued only upon
order of a court of competent jurisdiction or upon the specific re-
quest therefor by the person, or by a parent, guardian, or other
authorized representative of the person to whom the record of birth
relates. A certified copy of a birth certificate shall contain only the
personal data appearing on the birth certificate and shall not include
any of the confidential medical data on the certificate of birth.
(c) No birth certificate information shall be given where it is to
be used for purposes of commercial solicitation or private gain.
(d) The National Vital Statistics Division of the Public Health
Service may be furnished such copies or data as it may require for
national statistics; on the condition such data shall not be used for
other than statistical purposes by the National Vital Statistics Divi-
sion unless so authorized by the State Board of Health and Mental
Hygiene or its authorized representative.
(e) Federal, State, local, and other public or private agencies
may, upon request, be furnished copies or data for statistical pur-
poses upon such terms or conditions as may be prescribed by the
State Board of Health and Mental Hygiene or its authorized repre-
sentative.
[ (b) Fee.—] (f) For each certified [statement] or abridged copy
of a birth, death, fetal death, or marriage certificate, or for a report
that, after search, the requested record was found to be not on file,
[said Board] the State Board of Health and Mental Hygiene shall
collect a fee of one dollar ($1.00), to be paid to the State Treasurer.
[(c) No charges to servicemen or governmental agencies.—] (g)
No charge shall be made for a copy of a certificate requested by any
person formerly or currently in [any war service] the Armed Forces
of the United States Government when such certificate is to be used
in connection with any claim such person may have against said
government; nor shall any charge be made for a certificate requested
by any agency of the State of Maryland or any of its political sub-
divisions. [, provided that] The State Board of Health and Mental
Hygiene [shall be authorized to] may waive all or part of said fees
when collectible from agencies of the United States Government.
(h) The State Board of Health and Mental Hygiene is authorized
to approve specific projects for typewritten, photographic, or other
reproductions of original vital records, of carbon copies of these
records, and of indexes of these records. Such projects shall specify
the method of reproduction, the disposition or the location of the
depository of the records which were reproduced, and the type of
