No. 41
(House Joint Resolution 83)
House Joint Resolution requesting the State Roads Commission to
include in its "Critical Program" the dualizing of U. S. Route 113
from Pocomoke City to the Delaware line.
Whereas, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel from Norfolk to
Cape Charles, Virginia, is expected to be completed and opened to
public use in early 1964; and
Whereas, the opening of this facility will bring forth a tremendous
increase in highway traffic along the Atlantic Coast through the State
of Maryland, and particularly upon U. S. Route 113, which is a paral-
lel and direct route through the Delmarva Peninsula running from
Pocomoke City, Maryland, to Dover, Delaware; and
Whereas, the present U. S. Route 113 single lane highway through
the State of Maryland is insufficient to accommodate the increased
flow of traffic which will result from the opening of said Bridge-
Tunnel; and
Whereas, local government agencies and practically all service
clubs and civic organizations in the Maryland area have adopted reso-
lutions requesting the Maryland State Roads Commission to initiate
an immediate program for dualization of all of U. S. Route 113
through the State of Maryland, with copies of same being forwarded
to said State Roads Commission; and
Whereas, the State of Delaware has already initiated a program
and in the actual process of dualization of all of U. S. 113 through
that State to the Maryland line; and
Whereas, the dualization of U. S. Route 113 is necessary for the
economy, general welfare and safety of the citizens of the area in
which it is situated as well as providing safety and convenience to
the motoring public; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the Mary-
land State Roads Commission is hereby requested to include in its
"Critical Program" the dualization of U. S. Route 113 from Poco-
moke City to the Delaware line with planning and construction of
same to be begun at a date as early as possible; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the House forward a copy of this
Resolution to the Director of the Maryland State Roads Commission.
