J. MILLARD TAWES, Governor                    2153

That the Comptroller is further requested to submit a report as to
the studies and review of this commission and its recommendations
for such proposed legislation to the presiding officer of the Congress
of the United States and of the General Assembly of Maryland not
later than January 2, 1964; and it is further,

Resolved, that a copy of this resolution be sent by the Governor of
Maryland to the Comptroller of Maryland, the presiding officers of
the Congress of the United States and the Chairman of the Federal
Trade Commission of the adoption of this joint resolution with the
request that this study be made.

Approved May 6, 1963.

No. 40
(House Joint Resolution 82)

House Joint Resolution requesting the State Roads Commission to
include in its current Needs Study and also in its twenty year long
range program the construction of a second bridge connecting U. S.
Route 50 with Ocean City.

Whereas, the sudden storm that hit the Atlantic Coast on March
6-7, 1962, presented a serious problem in the evacuation of the resi-
dents of Ocean City and North Ocean City to places more safe and
secure by reason of an extremely high tide of more than three feet
of water at the foot of the Ocean City Bridge; and

Whereas, should such a storm hit the Coast during the resort sea-
son with many thousands of people in the area with only one bridge
for evacuation, the lives and safety of many people could be seriously
endangered; and

Whereas, when the present bridge was constructed the northern
limit of development at Ocean City was at 15th Street, since which
time North Ocean City has been developed with the construction of
many valuable dwellings, restaurants, hotels, motels, and apartment
houses up to 100th Street; and

Whereas, the construction of another bridge across Isle of Wight
Bay or Assawoman Bay connecting with Route 50 would be for the
safety and general welfare of the tourists, visitors and residents in
the area in the event of a recurring sudden storm as well as necessary
for the convenience of the public in general by reason of the immense
increase in traffic; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the Maryland
State Roads Commission is hereby requested to include in its current
Needs Study and its twenty year long range program consideration
of the feasibility and possibility of the construction of a bridge
across Isle of Wight Bay or Assawoman Bay connecting with U. S.
Route 50; and be it further

Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the House forward a copy of
this Resolution to the Director of the Maryland State Roads Com-
mission.

Approved May 6, 1963.
