assist him in carrying out the duties of his office. All deputies shall
be furnished with automobiles suitable for the performance of their
duties by the county commissioners, at no expense to the deputies.
The payment of the compensation and expenses provided for here-
in shall be made from the general funds of Anne Arundel County, in
the same manner as other general county disbursements are made
[; provided, however, that the payment of such compensation and
expenses as exceeds the budget allotment for same for the calendar
year 1959 shall be made from the general fund surplus of said
county].
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
January 1, 1964.

CHAPTER 902
(Senate Bill 630)
AN ACT to add a new Section 18A to Article 64A of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Merit System", to follow
immediately after Section 18 thereof, to provide that any State
employee promoted through reclassification of his existing job or
position where such promotion involves no substantial change in
his duties or responsibilities shall not be required to serve an addi-
tional probationary period.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That a new Section 18A be and it is hereby added to Article 64A of
the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Merit Sys-
tem", to follow immediately after Section 18 thereof, to read as
follows:
ARTICLE 64A
18A.
(a) Any State employee promoted through reclassification of his
existing job or position where such promotion involves no substan-
tial change in his actual duties or responsibilities shall not be re-
quired to serve an additional probationary period.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1963.
