2064                           LAWS OF MARYLAND                      [CH. 893

title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties"; to repeal
Sections 203 and 204 of Article 19 of the Code of Public Local
Laws of Maryland (1930 Edition), title "St. Mary's County", sub-
title "Sheriff", and to enact new Sections 203, 204, 205 and 205A
204A AND 204B in lieu thereof, to stand in the place of the sec-
tions so repealed; repealing obsolete local laws relating to the
Sheriff of St. Mary's County; providing for a chief deputy sheriff
and for deputy sheriffs of the county; establishing a county board
of public safety, providing for its powers and duties; authorizing
and directing the county commissioners to make certain provisions
and appropriations for the sheriff's office, and generally relating
to the office of Sheriff of St. Mary's County.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37 (r) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1962 Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and
Duties", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amend-
ments, to read as follows:

37.

(r) The Sheriff of St. Mary's County shall receive an annual
salary of $3,300 and he shall be allowed in addition thereto the sum
of $1,700 for expenses. He shall be assisted by such number of depu-
ties as are provided for in the public local laws of St. Mary's County
f appoint one deputy who shall reside in the vicinity or area of Lex-
ington Park who shall receive an annual salary of $3,000 and $1,700
annually for expenses, and one deputy who shall reside in the third
commissioner district, who shall receive an annual salary of $3,000
and $1,700 annually for expenses. He shall also appoint one deputy
who shall reside in or near the Town of Leonardtown whose principal
duty shall consist of policing said town, and he shall receive an an-
nual salary of $3,000 and $1,700 annually for expenses. In addition,
the Sheriff may appoint, with the approval and consent of the
County Commissioners, two deputies who shall be residents and
citizens of St. Mary's County and who shall police the entire county
regardless of commissioner districts and who shall each receive an
annual salary of $3,000 and $1,700 for expenses].

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That Sections 203 and 204 of
Article 19 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland (1930
Edition), title "St. Mary's County", sub-title "Sheriff", be and they
are hereby repealed; that new Sections 203, 204, 205 and 205A 204A
AND 204B, be and they are hereby enacted in lieu thereof, to stand
in the place of the sections so repealed, and all to read as follows:

203.

The county commissioners shall provide for the sheriff's office of
the county all necessary materials and equipment, county-owned
uniforms for all deputy sheriffs and such county-owned automobiles
as may be necessary; and shall annually appropriate such sums as
are necessary for the proper administration of the affairs of the
office and the discharge of its responsibilities.

204.

(a) There is established the Board of Public Safety of St. Mary's
County, consisting of the sheriff of the county, the state's attorney
