of five years and shall be considered as the final authority in matter

of conflict with other license boards of the county in matters relat-

ing to construction, zoning, measured distance, locations and other
matters generally related thereto. The council shall designate one

alternate member for the board of appeals who shall be empowered
to sit on the board in the absence of any member of the board; and

when the alternate is absent, the council may designate a temporary
alternate.

(B-l) THE COUNCIL SHALL DESIGNATE ONE ALTER-
NATE MEMBER FOR THE BOARD OF APPEALS WHO SHALL
MAY BE EMPOWERED TO SIT ON THE BOARD IN THE
ABSENCE OF ANY MEMBER OF THE BOARD; AND WHEN
THE ALTERNATE IS ABSENT, THE COUNCIL MAY DESIG-
NATE A TEMPORARY ALTERNATE.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1963.

CHAPTER 557
(Senate Bill 290)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, subsection 25 (a)
of Article 51 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition
and 1962 Supplement), title "Juries", sub-title "Qualification and
Selection of Jurors", and to add new subsection 25(j) thereto to
follow immediately after subsection 25 (i) providing that jurors
in Howard County shall receive $8.00 per day compensation and no
extra allowance for travel expenses.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That subsection 25 (a) of Article 51 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1957 Edition and 1962 Supplement), title "Juries", sub-title
"Qualification and Selection of Jurors", be and it is hereby repealed
and re-enacted, and that new subsection 25(j) be and it is hereby
added thereto, to follow immediately after subsection 25 (i), all to
read as follows:

25.

(a) Jurors in Washington County shall receive eight dollars per
day and a reasonable amount, in the discretion of the County Com-
missioners for each mile over five miles in going to and returning
from court; in Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne's and Caroline coun-
ties, and in Baltimore City, seven dollars and fifty cents per day; in
Somerset County, seven dollars and fifty cents per day; in Anne
Arundel and Montgomery counties, ten dollars per day, and no extra
allowance shall be given either for mileage or overtime in Anne Arun-
del and Montgomery counties; in Carroll County, eight dollars per
day; in Prince George's County, jurors shall receive per diem com-
pensation, not less than five ($5.00) dollars nor more than ten
($10.00) dollars, in such amounts as shall be set, from time to time,
by the judges of the Circuit Court for said county and in all other
