thirty and Eight cometh the afd Lord propry. by his Attny
afd and prayeth that the afd Joan to the Indictment afd
may Answer
And the afd Joan in her proper person comes and de:
:fends the force and injury when &ca. And saith that she
cannot gainsay the Indictment afd so as afd against
her brought nor can She say but that She is guilty of the
premisses afd above upon her Imposed as by the
Indictment as it is Alledged and thereof Submits to
the Court
Therefore it is Considered by the Justices here to wit at
Kent County Court at the Court house in the Town of Chester
in said County on the third tuesday of August being the
fifteenth day of said month in the year of Our Lord seventeen
hundred thirty & eight that the afd Joan Edwards have on her
bare back at the publick Whiping post at in the County
afd five lashes and the blood to Appear as a punishment
for Committing the fornication afd Also it is Consider'd
by the Justices afd at the time and place afd that the afd Joan
pay the sum of three hundred and thirty pounds of tobacco
Costs Accrueing on the premisses afd to the Severall Officers
of this Court &c.
Ordered by this Court here taht the sherr. of Kent County
take into his Custody the body of the afd Joan and Execute
the punishment in the Judgment afd Specified And after:
:wards to bring her the said John in to Court Of which said
precept the said sherr. to wit William Harris Gent. makes
return thereof to the Court here that he hath Executed the
punishment in the Judgment afd Specified and have her
the same Joan here before the Court
Ordered by this Court here that joan Edwards prove the
Begetter of the Bastard child afd And upon her Oath
Delares that the father of the Child afd is dead
Ordered by this Court here that the afd Joan give Security
