do present that Sarah Turner late of Kent County Spinster
on the first day of May Anno Dom. Seventeen hundred and
thirty eight at Kent County afd did Committ fornication with a
Certain Man to the Jurors unknown and the same persona
then & there did permitt to have carnall knowledge of her body &
to beget a Bastard child on her the said Sarah Turner to the Evill
example of others in like case offending against the peace &c and
against the form of the Act of Assembly in such case made & provided
&c                                                     J George
On the Back of the afd Indictmt. was Indorsed as fol. Vizt
                          Billa Vera Chrisr. Hall
And now here to wit at Kent County Court at the Court house
in the Town of Chester in said County on the third tuesday of March
being the twentyeth day of said month in the year of Our Lord God
seventeen hundred thirty and eight Cometh the afd Lord propry by
Joshua George his Attry and prayeth that the afd Sarah to the
Indictment afd may Answer            And the afd Sarah in her propr
person comes & defends the force and injury when &c And saith
that she cannot gainsay the Indictmt. afd so as afd
against her brought nor can she say but that she is guilty
of the premisses afd above upon her Imposed as by the afd
Indictmt. it is alledged and thereof Submits herself to the Court &c
Therefore it is Considered by the Justices here to wit at Kent
County Court at the Court house in the Town of Chester in said County
on the third tuesday of March being the twentyeth day of said month
in the year of Our Lord seventeen hundred thirty & eight that the
afd Sarah be whitped at the publicl whipping post of the
County afd on her bare Back with five lashes well laid on
and the blood to Appear &c Also it is Considered by the Justs.
at the time and place afd last mentioned that the said Sar.
pay the sum of                                      pounds of
tobacco Costs Accrueing on the premisses afd to the Severall
[Offic]ers of this Court &c
Ordered by this Court here that the sher. of Kent County take
into his Custody the body of the afd Sarah & Execute the punish:
:ment in the Judgmt. afd Specified And afterwards to bring her
into Court again of Which said precept the said sher. to wit Simn
Wilmer Gentleman makes return thereof on the day and
year afd that he hath Executied the punishment in the Judgt.
