The question recurring on the order,
It was adopted.

The Speaker laid before the House the following communi-
cation :

Hon. John S. Berry, Speaker of the House of Delegates:

Sir:—I hereby resign my office of Reading Clerk to the
House of Delegates.

James W. Clayton.
On motion of Mr. Harrington,
Said resignation was accepted.
Mr. Tilghman offered the following order:
Ordered, That Charles W. Crocker, of Baltimore city, be
and he is hereby appointed Reading Clerk, of this House, in
the place of James W. Clayton, appointed Chief Clerk;
Which was adopted.

The Speaker announced that in obedience to an order of the
House he had appointed J. L. Parvis, of Caroline county, and
Vaughan Smith, of Somerset county, additional committee
clerks.

James W. Clayton, Chief Clerk elect, appeared, and was
duly qualified by the Speaker.

Charles W. Crocker, Reading Clerk elect, and J. L. Parvis,
Committee Clerk, appeared and were duly qualified by the
Speaker.

Mr. Grieves presented the following resolution:

Resolved, That the thanks of the House of Delegates be
tendered to Vaughan Smith Esq., for his earnest endeavors
faithfully to discharge his duties, while acting as Chief Clerk
to this House;

Which was read the first time, by special order the second
time, and adopted.

Mr. Goldsborough, presented a memorial of Ann Elvisa
Jones, and Maria Susannah Jones, of Queen Anne's county,
aprying the passage of an act for their relief, &c.;

Which was referred to the committee on Judiciary.

Mr. Dorsey, presented a petition of sundry citizens of Elys-
ville for the establishing a Primary School district, &c, in
Howard county;

Which was referred to the committee on Education.

Mr. Todd, presented a petition from the citizens of Caroline
