The said bill was then sent to the Senate.
The bill entitled, an act to provide for the division of the
city of Baltimore into twenty wards, and of said wards into
election districts ;
Being upon its second reading,
Mr. Alexander proposed the following amendments :
"Strike out all after the enacting clause, and insert:
"That the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore shall have
authority, at any time, and from time to time, in their dis-
cretion, to re-divide the several wards of said city, so as to
make the number of voters in each ward as nearly as practi-
cable; said wards not to exceed twenty in number; Provid-
ed that said divisions shall not in any manner disturb the pres-
ent Congressional Districts, or such Congressional Districts as
shall hereafter be laid off ;"
Mr. Belt proposed the following amendment to said amend-
ment :
"Provided that it shall be the duty of the Mayor and
City Council to exercise the powers granted by this act with-
in the period of six months from its passage ;"
Which was not assented to.
