In section 3, line 11, after the word "to," strike out
"sell," and insert "hire out;"

Which was assented to.

Also, proposed the following amendments :

In section 3, line 24, strike out "sale," and insert "hir-
ing out;"

In section 3, line 22, strike out " sale," and insert "hiring
out;"

Which were assented to.

Mr. Grieves proposed the following amendment:

In section 3, line 11, after the word "free negro," strike
out" to some resident of," and insert " within;"

Which was assented to.

Mr. Mackubin proposed the following substitute for the
third section:

Section 4. And be it enacted, That all free negroes so as
aforesaid, returned and recorded in the office of Register of
Wills, who shall be found to be without a trade or other reg-
ular employment, shall assemble at same convenient place to
be selected by the sheriff in the" neighborhood where said ne-
groes may reside, on the first of January in each and every
year, or within ten days thereafter; due notice being given
thereof by the sheriff, and the said sheriff shall at the time
appointed, offer for hire for one year, said free negro,
to the highest bidder residing in the neighborhood where
said negroes may reside; the party or parties hiring
given bond, to be approved by' the sheriff, to be filed in the
office of Register of Wills as aforesaid, for the kind treat-
ment and prompt and faithful payment of the wages of said
negroes.

Which was assented to.

Mr. Mackubin proposed the following amendment:

"Strike out the fourth section;"

Which was assented to.

Mr. Landing proposed the following amendment:

"Strike out the fifth section;"

Which was assented to.

Mr. Worthington, proposed the following amendment:

In section 6, line 7, strike out "to the lowest bidder," and
insert "for the shortest time,"
