On motion of Mr. Magruder,

The rules were suspended; and

The bill entitled, an act to apply to the support of common
schools the amount of money received on account of the inter-
est upon the claim of the State against the General Govern-
ment for money advanced by the State during the late war
with England, was taken up for consideration.

Mr. Magruder proposed the following amendment:
Sec. 1. Strike out all after the enacting clause, and insert:
"That the Treasurer of the State be, and is hereby author-
ised and directed to have invested the said sum of one hun-
dred and sixty thousand nine hundred and twenty-nine dollars
and twenty-six cents in the bonds of this State, or in his dis-
cretion, in some safe and profitable stock or stocks, fund or
funds, and upon the warrant of the Comptroller to distribute
annually the interest or dividends arising therefrom, among
the several counties of the State and the city of Baltimore, in
the ratio of the whole representation of the said counties and
city, respectively, in the General Assembly, in the same mode
that the free school fund is now or may be hereafter distribu-
ted according to law, to the person or persons duly and legal-
ly authorised to receive the same;"

Which was assented to; and

The bill, as amended, read a second and third times, by
special order, and passed by yeas and nays, as follow :
