70               JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Jan. 18,

Mr. Magruder, presented the petition of George W. Dowell
and twenty-one other citizens of Calvert county, praying the
passage of an act to authorize the school commissioners of said
county, to lay out another School district in said county ;

Which was referred to the Calvert county delegation.

Mr. Harrington, presented the memorial of the trustees of
the Male Free School of Baltimore;

Which was referred to the committee on Ways and Means.

The Speaker laid before the House a memorial for the re-
moval of the first Toll Gate on the Baltimore and Washington
Turnpike road ;

Which was referred to the committee on Roads' and High-
ways.

Mr. Kennard offered the following order :

Ordered, That 300 copies of the Adjutant General's report
be printed,

Which was adopted.
On motion of Mr. Magruder,

Leave was granted to the committee on Claims, to introduce
a bill to pay to George D. Claytor, collector of the State Tax,
for the second collection district of Anne Arundel county, for
the year eighteen hundred and fifty-seven, a sum of money
overpaid by him into the Treasury.

On motion of Mr. Kidd,

Leave was granted to the committee on Ways and Means
to introduce a bill to repeal the tax on Mortgages.

On motion of Mr. Spence,

Leave was granted to the Worcester delegation, to introduce
a bill to refund to Zadok Marshall, of Worcester county, a
certain sum of money erroneously paid into the Treasury.

On motion of Mr. Kennard,

Leave was granted to the committee on the Library, to re-
port a bill to provide for procuring copies of sundry important
historical papers now in Libraries in Europe, for the use of the
State Library.

On motion of Mr. Hearn,

Leave was granted to the Somerset and Worcester dele-
gations, to introduce a bill for the better management of
Stevens' Ferry, on Pocomoke river.

On motion of Mr. Rogers,

Leave was granted to the committee on Judiciary, to intro-
duce a bill to increase the number of Notaries Public, in Bal-
timore city.
