|
1858.] OF THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES. 641
And be it further resolved, That in the opinion of this
General Assembly, the course of Governor Henry A. Wise,
of Virginia, in opposing the Lecompton Constitution, is an
act of treason to the South and deserves the severest repre-
hension of the Southern States of this Union, and we con-
sider this conduct upon his part as entirely inexcusable, in
view of his position as Governor of the largest and most in-
fluential of the Southern States, and we hereby pledge our-
selves to oppose his elevation to the Presidency in every way
in our power.
Resolved, That we cordially approve of the official course of
the Hon. Robert J. Walker, late Governor of Kansas, on the
slavery question, up to the time of his opposition to the Le-
compton Constitution, and thank him for his uniform devo-
tion to the rights of the South; but we unqualifiedly con-
demn his opposition to the Lecompton Constitution, and de-
nounce him as the equal of Governor Wise in treason to the
South.
Resolved, That the explanation of the doctrine of popular
sovereignty and the Kansas-Nebraska Act, as given at the
last session of Congress by Senator Douglas, exhibits a
thorough knowledge of the true meaning and object of that
act, and a profound acquaintance with that great doctrine;
and that the construction given to that act by its said author
at the present session of Congress, shows an utter ignorance
of its true object and meaning, and of the great principle of
popular sovereignty, and we pledge ourselves to oppose his
elevation to the Presidency in every way in our power.
