The House met.
Present, at the call of the roll, the following members :
Messrs. Berry, Speaker, Neale, Wickes, Mackubin, Grif-
fiss, Magruder, Burgess, Walker, Ford, of Baltimore coun-
ty, Clarke, Goldsborough, Waller, Moore, Tilghman, Dail,
Grieves, Ford of Cecil, Larrimore, Sudler, of Queen Anne's,
Landing, Spence. Thomas, Harding, Bowlus, Root, Koons,
Hobbs, Hanway, Bacon, Todd, Stirling, Kennard, Harring-
ton, Alexander, Rohrer, Gray, Schnebly, Riddlemoser, Thrus-
ton, McKinstry Reindollar, Dorsey.
The House took up for consideration the bill entitled an
act for the establishment of a system of public schools in
Maryland.
Mr. Thruston proposed the following amendment:
Strike out all after the 3d section of the 2d article after the
word "same" in the fourth line thereof;
Which was assented to.
Mr. Belt proposed the following amendment:
In article 8 section 1, line 5, strike out the words ''school
treasurer'' and insert "Orphans' Court."
Which was not assented to.
Mr. Spence proposed the following amendment:
And be it enacted, That Worcester county be and is here-
by exempted from all provisions and taxations of this bill,
until it is acceded to by a majority of the votes cast at the
next general election in said county, and that the judges of
each election district in said county are hereby authorised
and directed to open books at their respective districts in said
county for the purpose of ascertaining by ballot the desires of
the voters of said county;
Which was assented to.
Mr. Rogers proposed the following amendment:
Strike out in the amendment heretofore adopted, provi-
ding that nothing in this act contained shall apply to certain
counties, the word "Frederick;"
Which was assented to.
Mr. Ford, of Cecil, proposed the following amendment:
"Section 5. And be it enacted, that none of the provisions
of this act shall apply to Cecil and Kent counties;
Which was assented to.
