508            JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS; [Feb. 23,

Mr. Tilghman, from a select committee, reported favor-
ably on a bill entitled, an act to prevent the filling up of the
harbors in Somerset county;

Which was read the first time.

Mr. Sudler, of Queen Anne's county, reported favorably
on a bill entitled, an act authorising the County Commissioners
of Queen Anne's county to levy an additional tax upon the
assessable property in School District No. 4, of said county;

Which was read the first time.

Mr. Belt, from a select committee, reported favorably on a
Senate bill entitled, an act for the preservation of the papers
of James J. Chew, deceased, former sheriff of Prince
George's county, so far as they relate to his office as Sheriff;

Which was read the first time.

Mr. Spence, from a select committee, reported favorably on
a bill entitled, an act supplementary to an act entitled, an
act to authorize the Circuit Courts of this State and the Crimi-
nal Court of Baltimore city to appoint assistant counsel for
the State to aid in the trial of criminal and other State cases
pending in said courts, and to oblige the county commission-
ers of the several counties and the Mayor and City Council of
Baltimore to provide payment for the services of said coun-
sel, passed 27th of February, 1856, chapter 19.

Which was read the first time, and referred to the commit-
tee on Judiciary.

The Speaker laid before the House the following communi-
cation :

The House of Delegates of Maryland:

The Comptroller of the Treasury Department respectfully
requests of your Honorable body the immediate passage of
an act appropriating a sum of money to be applied in repair-
ing his office, as the damages sustained on yesterday, have ren-
dered it totally unfit to be occupied in the discharge of his

official duties.

Mr. Root presented a petition from sundry citizens of Fred-
