your Honorable body will recognise, from the position, the
importance and the usefulness of this institution, the justice
and the wisdom, the prosperity and the advantage of grant-
ing their prayer for such donation—and your memorialists,
&c, &c,

Which was ordered to be printed on the Journal.

Mr. Goldsborough proposed the following resolutions:

Be it Resolved, by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the State Librarian be, and he is hereby authorised and
directed to subscribe for three hundred copies of the "Mary-
land Register," for 1858 and 1859, when published by James

Wingate, at --------per copy; and that upon the delivery of

said books to the State Library, the Comptroller is hereby
authorised to issue his warrant to the Treasurer to pay said
James Wingate for said "Maryland Register," at the rate

of--------per copy, when the money therefor is appropriated

by law.

Resolved, That two hundred and fifty copies of said "Mary-
land Register," shall be distributed from the State Library,
under the direction of the Comptroller of the Treasury, among
the different officers of this State, in the various counties and
the city of Baltimore.

Which was referred to the committee on Judiciary.

Mr. Goldsborough offered the following order :

Ordered, That the select committee, to whom was referred
the memorial of the pilots, have power to send for persons
and papers, and examine witnesses under oath, provided that
no expense to the State is incurred, and upon this further pro-
viso, that this inquiry shall not extend beyond Thursday, the
19th day of this month, without the further order of this
House.

Ordered, That the Speaker of this House be requested to
appoint a clerk to this committee;

Which was adopted.

Mr. Tilghman offered the following order:

Ordered, That the Adjutant General be requested to direct
a national salute to be fired at sunrise, meridian, and sunset,
on Monday next, 22d inst., in honor of the birth of General
George Washington, the Father of his country;
