The following message was received from the Senate :

By the Senate,

January 12, 1858.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates :

We have received your message, proposing to open the re-
turns of election for Governor of Maryland, this day, at one o'-
clock, in the hall of the House of Delegates, in the presence of
both Houses, and agreeably to the requirements of the Constitu-
tion of this State, and concur therein.

By order,

                                                                              Secretary.

On motion of Mr. Mackubin, it was

Ordered, That the State Librarian be authorized and directed
to transfer to the Clerk of the School Commissioners for Anne
Arundel county, for the use of the Public Schools and Academies
of said county, the desks formerly used by this body, and now in
the hall of the State House.

On motion of Mr. Kilbourne, it was

Ordered, That the committee on Judiciary, hereafter to be ap-
pointed, be instructed to report a bill more effectually to secure
impartial juries, and to provide for the selection thereof by lot
from a larger number of suitable persons, to be first returned by
the respective sheriffs of this State to their respective courts.

On motion of Mr. Contee, it was

Ordered, That the State Librarian be instructed to purchase
fifty copies of the Legislative Guide and fifty copies of Jeffer-
son's Manual for the Library.

Mr. Wickes presented the petition of Emory Sudler to make
valid a deed from E. R. Carville to him;

Which was referred to the committee on Judiciary hereafter to
be appointed.

Mr. Thruston presented the petition of the Mayor and Coun-
cilmen of the city of Cumberland to make valid the survey of
the taxable limits of said city as adopted by the Mayor and Coun-
cilmen of said city.

Which was referred to the Allegany county delegation;

Mr. Wickes presented the petition of Levi Roger, free colored
man to run a vessel in Maryland without a white man on board;
Which was laid on the table.

Mr. Burgess presented the petition of the board of commission-
ers of the tax, of Charles county, praying that they be empower-
ed to levy a sum sufficient to build a jail in said county.
