the selection of an efficient Visitor from every county. In
conclusion, the Board respectfully call the attention of your
Excellency, and of the honorable House of Delegates, to the
fact that their services are rendered entirely without pecuni-
ary compensation or emolument of any kind, and frequently
involve the performance of duties both laborious and disagree-
able in their character; but that these services are and will
continue to be cheerfully performed. The Board feel them-
selves abundantly rewarded by the consciousness that the val-
uable institution, under their charge, has been steadily grow-
ing in its character and means of usefulness, and that it has
been the source of much good to a large class of unfortu-
nate sufferers from every part of the State of Maryland.

The Secretary of the Senate delivered the following bills:

A bill entitled, an act to authorise the American Coal Com-
pany of Allegany county, to issue bonds and dispose of the
same;

Which was read the first time, and referred to the commit-
tee on Corporations; also,

The bill entitled, an act to relieve Mathias N. Lindsay,
sheriff of Worcester county, from the payment of certain
taxes in chancery, and fines and forfeitures due the State of
Maryland, in the years 1842, 1843 and 1844;

Endorsed "passed by yeas and nays;"

Which was read the first time, and referred to the com-
mittee on Claims; also, returned

The bill entitled, an act to incorporate the New Cut Turn-
pike Road Company;

Endorsed "passed by yeas and nays;" also, returned

The bill entitled, an act appointing Commissioners to ena-
ble the American Bank to complete its organization under the
act of incorporation, passed at January session, 1856, chap-
ter 211;

Endorsed "passed by yeas and nays," without amend-
ment.
