Mr. Smith, of Baltimore city, presented a memorial of the
members of the City Council of Baltimore for the passage of
the bill for the opening of Green Spring Avenue ;

Which was read and ordered to lie on the table.

Mr. Stirling presented a memorial of the Independent
Greys', a Military Company of Baltimore, asking compensation
for services rendered the State by order of the Governor;

Which was referred to the committee on Claims.

Mr. Grieves presented the report of the trustees of the
Cambridge Academy;

Which was read and referred to the committee on Educa-
tion;

Mr. Mackubin presented the following communication from
the Governors and Visitors of St. John's College, through
the Principal in obedience to an order of the House of the
4th February, 1858.
To the Honorable, the House of Delegates:

The Visitors and Governors of St. John's College beg leave
most respectfully to submit the information called for in an
order, adopted this morning by your honorable body. In
doing which we propose to answer your questions seriatim, in
the fullest manner possible.

Question 1st. What is the origin of said College?

Answer 1st. By act of 1784, chapter 37, it is declared that
"a College or General Seminary of learning, by the name of
St. John's College be established on the Western Shore;
that the said College should be founded and maintained for-
ever, upon the most liberal plan for the benefit of youth of
every religious denomination." And to provide a permanent
fund for the further establishment and encouragement of the
said College, it was enacted, "that the sum of seventeen
hundred and fifty pounds, current money, or four thousand
six hundred and sixty-six dollars, sixty-six and two thirds
cents, be annually and forever thereafter given and granted
as a donation by the public, to the use of the said College on
the Western Shore, to be applied by the Visitors and Gover-
nors of said College to the payment of salaries to the princi-
pal, professors and teachers of said College."
Among the original members of the Board of Visitors and
Governors of the College, we find the names of Charles Carroll
of Carrolton, Arch. Bishop Carroll of the Roman Catholic
Church, Bishop Claggett of the Protestant Episcopal Church,
Judges Samuel Chase and Jeremiah T. Chase, Nicholas
Carroll, Governor Stone, James Bryce and Judge Ridgely.

The first meeting of the Board was held on the 28th of
February, 1786. On the 1st of March of the same year, the
