On counting the ballots it was ascertained that Mr. Kil-
bourn had received 46 votes, and that Mr. Naill had received
23 votes.                                                                    

Whereupon, the Hon. E. G. Kilbourn was declared duly
elected Speaker of the House of Delegates.

On motion of Mr. Briscoe,                               

The oath of office was administered to the Speaker elect by
Mr. Goldsborough, the temporary chairman.

The members were then severally qualified by the Speaker
in the presence of each other, by taking the oaths of office,
and subscribing to a declaration of their belief in the Chris-
tian religion.                                             

Mr. Harding offered the following order:

Ordered, That Milton Y. Kidd, of Cecil county, be and he
is hereby appointed Chief Clerk of this House; that John S.
Mills, of Calvert county, be and he is hereby appointed Read-
ing Clerk of this House; that Thaddeus K. Preuss, of St.
Mary's county, Robert Bowie, of Prince George's county,
Robert H. Corbin, of Somerset county, Francis A. Murphy,
of Howard county, and R. Brown Henderson, of Frederick
county, be and they are hereby appointed Committee Clerks;
that Col. John S. Biddison, of Baltimore county, be and he
is hereby appointed Sergeant-at-Arms; that Reuben A.
Bogely, of Montgomery county, and Thomas E. Schley, of
Washington county, be and they are hereby appointed Door-
keepers; that Edward Marshall, of Dorchester county, be
and he is hereby appointed Postmaster; that Joseph H. Tarr,
of Caroline county, be and he is hereby appointed Folder;
and that James R. Brewer and William Clayton, of Anne
Arundel county, be and they are hereby appointed Pages of
this House.                           

Which was read.

Mr. Denison, of Baltimore city, moved to amend by strik-
ing out the name of "Milton Y. Kidd,'' and substituting
the name of "James W. Clayton " in lieu thereof.

Mr. Ford called for the previous question ;
Which was sustained.

The question being, "shall the main question be now
put?" was sustained ;

The question then recurring on the adoption of the substi-
tute, the yeas and nays were ordered, and appeared as fol-
