The Secretary of the Senate delivered the following:

A bill entitled, an act supplementary to an act entitled, an
act appropriating a sum of money for the rendering more secure
against fire the State House and the public archives, for
erecting a lire-proof record office, and for enlarging the State
Library-room and the hall of the House of Delegates;

Which was read the first time, and referred to the com-
mittee on Claims.

Also, delivered the following message:

By the Senate,

February 15, 1860.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates :

We have received your message of this date, returning the
bill entitled, an act to authorise Jeremiah L. Pattison, of
Dorchester county, to erect and keep a gate on the public
road leading from Tobaccostick to Taylor's Island, and ask-
ing, the Senate to recede from its amendment thereto. We
hereby accede to your request.

W. Kilgour,

Secretary.

Also, returned therewith the bill entitled, an act to autho-
rise Jeremiah L. Pattison, of Dorchester county, to erect and
keep a gate on the public road leading from Tobaccostick to
Taylor's Island;

Endorsed, "amendments receded from," which was concur-
red in.

The consideration of Mr. Jacobs' bill was then resumed.

Mr. Goldsborough offered a substitute, providing that noth-
ing in this section shall be construed to apply to the sale
of religious books, pamphlets, newspapers, or tracts, not dis-
seminating abolition sentiments;

Which was lost.

The question then recurring on the amendment,
