396          JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Feb. 13,

Mr. Keene, from a select committee, reported favorably on
the bill entitled, an act to authorise the citizens of Kerwane
Neck, in Dorchester county, to erect a gate across the public
road;

Which was read the first time.

A message was received from the Executive per hands of
his private Secretary, in response to the resolutions of in-
quiry, in relation to the South Carolina resolutions;

Which was read and ordered to be printed.

On motion of Mr. Chaplain,

It was referred to the joint special committee ordered by
the House on that subject-
Mr. Chaplain proposed the following:

Resolved unanimously by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That His Excellency, the Governor of Maryland, is
hereby authorised to procure a sword, with suitable devices
and ornaments, and present the same, in the name of the
State, to Colonel Dixon S. Miles, of the United States Army,
as a testimonial of the high appreciation entertained by his
native State for his gallant services, heroic conduct, and uni-
form military skill, displayed during the late war in Mexico;

Which was read the first time.

Mr. Bryan, from a select committee, reported favorably on
the bill entitled, an act authorising the commissioners of
Prince George's county to subscribe for a correct map of said
county;

Also, on the bill entitled, an act for the relief of the sure-
ties on the bond of Richard J. Edelen deceased, former col-
lector of the third election district of Prince George's county;

Which were severally read the first time.

Mr. Mills, from a select committee, reported favorably on
the bill entitled, an act to amend an act entitled, an act to in-
corporate the Manchester Savings' Institution;

Which was read the first time, and referred to the commit-
tee on Corporations.

Mr. Mackubin, from the committee on Claims, made a fa-
vorable report on the Senate bill entitled, an act authorising
the Comptroller to draw a warrant on the Treasurer for four
