Mr. Freaner offered the following resolutions :

Whereas, events of the past few years have demonstrated
to the satisfaction of this, the General Assembly of Mary-
land, that a powerful sectional party has been organized,
and is now in existence in the northern portion of our Union,
the object of which is to wage a war of extermination against
the institution of slavery, in defiance of the guarantees of
the Federal Constitution; and whereas, the election of John
Sherman, of Ohio, to the Speakership of the present House
of Representatives, or any other Black Republican, would
materially facilitate the object of this sectional party; and
whereas, the people of Maryland earnestly and hopefully
sympathize with the South in their efforts to resist the en-
croachments of this sectional party; therefore be it

Resolved, That if any representative, or representatives of
Maryland, in the Congress now assembled, should, under any
circumstances or combination of circumstances, vote for John
Sherman, or any other member of the present House of Rep-
resentatives who endorsed the "Helper book," or should di-
rectly or indirectly aid in his election by voting for an una-
vailable candidate, having no prospect of success, he or they
