The said bill was then returned to the Senate.

Mr. Lester, from a select committee, reported favorably on the
Senate bill entitled, an act amendatory of an act entitled, an act
for the protection of the property of the fire companies in the city
of Baltimore, passed December session 1837, chapter 190:

Mr. Hall submitted the following message:                 

              By the House of Delegates,

                            March 10th, 1856.

Gentlemen of the Senate:

We have received your message, proposing to appoint a joint
committee of three from each House, to visit and inspect the
Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, for the purpose of inquiring into its
condition, &c, with reference to the State's further disposition of
her interest therein, and to report to the next General Assembly;
and informing us that you have appointed Messrs. Hoffman, Da-
vis and Sothoron.

We concur in your proposition, and name on the part of this
House Messrs.                                                           to join the

gentlemen appointed by your honorable body.                       

By Order,

Thomas H. Kent, of Jos., Clerk.

Mr. Travers moved to fill the blank with the names of five in-
stead of three;                           

The question being taken, it was                                     

                                                                       

Determined in the negative.

Mr. Duvall moved to reconsider the vote just taken;
Which was determined in the negative.
Mr. Partridge submitted the following message :                 

By the House of Delegates,             

March 10th, 1856.
Gentlemen of the Senate;                           

We have received the message of your honorable body pro-
posing a joint committee to inspect and report upon the condition
of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal,                                       

Inasmuch as we think it inexpedient to institute such inquiry,
we respectfully decline to concur in such appointment.
