Also, returned a bill entitled, an act to increase the allowance
to the sheriff of Howard and Anne Arundel counties, for keeping
and supporting in their respective jails, such prisoners as maybe
committed for breaches of the peace anil for any criminal offences;

Endorsed, "passed by yeas and nays, with proposed amend-

ments."

AMENDMENTS PROPOSED.

Strike all after the word "for" in the 3rd line of the 1st sec-
tion, to the end of said section and insert:                 

"Keeping and boarding all prisoners committed to the jails of
said counties for breaches of the peace, or for any criminal offen-
ces or otherwise, and for keeping and boarding any runaway
negro, or negro slave committed to the jails of said counties by
any citizen of this State, the sum of forty cents per day in lieu of
the sum now allowed, to be levied and collected according to
law."                               

Strike out the word "supporting" in the title, and insert the
word "boarding," ad add at the end of title the words, "or
otherwise, and for keeping and boarding any runaway negro or
negro slave, committed to the jails of said counties by any citizen
of this State."

The said bill, as amended, was then passed by yeas and nays
as follows:
