A bill entitled, an act to erect the town of Cumberland into a
city and for other purposes,

A bill entitled, an act to increase the allowance to the Sheriff
of Anne Arundel county for keeping and supporting prisoners in
jail committed for breaches of the peace or for any criminal of-

fences;

Mr. Stewart moved the following amendments :

Sec. 2. And be it enacted that the provisions of this act shall
be extended to the Sheriff of Howard county:

Sec. 3. And be it enacted, that this act shall take effect from
the date of its passage.

On motion of Mr. Valiant,                                   

The further consideration of the bill was postponed.

The bill entitled, an act appropriating a sum of money for the
use of John Palmer, was taken up,

On motion of Mr. valiant,

Further consideration of the bill was postponed for one
day.

A bill entitled, an act to prevent obstructions in Union Dock,

in the city of Baltimore.                                       

Was read a second time.

A bill, entitled an act allowing compensation to the Auditor

of the city of Baltimore, for collecting taxes due and in arrears

to the State of Maryland,                     

Was read a second time.

On motion of Mr. Smith,                               

Further consideration of the bill was postponed.

The Secretary of the Senate delivered the following mes-

sage:

January 22d, 1856.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates:

We propose, with your concurrence, to proceed to the appoint-
ment of the joint committee for the investigation of the proceed-

ings of the Board of Visitors and Governors of St. John's Col-

lege, authorized by the resolution passed at December session
1852, No. 41.

We have appointed Messrs. Semmes, McCullough, and Davis,
to constitute our part of said Committee.
