158 JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Feb. 3

PRESENTATION OF PETITIONS, MEMORIALS AND
OTHER PAPERS.

The President submitted the following:
CITY DELEGATION,

ANNAPOLIS, MD., February 3, 1916.

To the Honorable President and

Members of the Senate of Maryland.

GENTLEMEN AND FRIENDS:

Please permit me to express to you my heartfelt appreci-
ation of the very kindly words of sympathy extended to me
by your Honorable Body upon the death of my beloved wife.
Nothing is more comforting to a man in the moment of his
distress than words of sincere consolation from his friends
and companions. That is why your resolution meant so much
to me, and that is why I am so grateful to you for having
sent it. It came to me at a moment of severe trial and I shall
never forget the spirit that prompted it.

Sincerely,

ROBERT E. LEE,
