Superintendent of Schools of Prince George's County, the Maryland
State Police and/or the Prince George's County Police.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1961.

CHAPTER 520
(House Bill 465)

AN ACT to add a new Section to Article 66½ of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Motor Vehicles", sub-
title "Operation of Vehicles upon Highways", said new Section to
be known as Section 317A and to follow immediately after Sec-
tion 317 of said Article authorizing the Board of County Com-
missioners and the County Councils of the several counties, with
the approval of the Chairman of the State Roads Commission or
his duly authorized representative, to impose restrictions as to the
operation, weight and speed of vehicles to be operated upon county
highways for certain periods of time with certain limitations and
exceptions and under certain conditions and providing for penalties
for the violation of such restrictions.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That a new Section to be known as Section 317A, be and is hereby
added to Article 66½ of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957
Edition), title "Motor Vehicles", sub-title "Operation of Vehicles
upon Highways", said new Section to follow immediately after
Section 317 of said Article and to read as follows:

317A.

(1) The Boards of County Commissioners or the County Council
of any county with the approval of the Chairman of the State
Roads Commission, or his duly authorized representative, with re-
spect to any road or highway under its jurisdiction or maintenance
may by resolution prohibit the operation of vehicles upon any such
road or highway or impose restrictions as to the weight of vehicles
to be operated upon any such highway, or reduce the maximum
speed limits of vehicles operating upon any such highway for any
one period not to exceed sixty (60) days, and for a total period of
not to exceed ninety (90) days in any one calendar year, whenever
any such road or highway by reason of deterioration, rain, snow,
or other condition will be seriously damaged or destroyed unless the
use of vehicles thereon is prohibited or the permissible weights there-
of reduced or the maximum speed limits be reduced, provided, how-
ever, vehicles supplying emergency service such as supplying fuel
and fuel oil and hauling milk may use such roads and highways
upon written permission of the County Commissioners or the
