CHAPTER 381
(Senate Bill 280)

AN ACT to repeal Section 280 (a) of Article 66½ of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Motor Vehicles", sub-title
"Operation of Vehicles Upon Highways", and to enact new Section
280 (a) in lieu thereof, to stand in the place of the section repealed,
to prohibit operation of certain new motor vehicles without di-
rectional or turn signals as required herein and relating to the
requirements for stop signals on motor vehicles and school buses.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 280 (a) of Article 66½ of the Annotated Code of
Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Motor Vehicles", sub-title "Operation
of Vehicles Upon Highways", be and it is hereby repealed and that
new Section 280 (a) be and it is hereby enacted in lieu thereof, to
stand in the place of the section repealed, to read as follows:

280.

(a) It shall be unlawful to operate on any public highway or street
of this State, any motor vehicle registered in this State and sold as
a new vehicle after June 1, 1961, unless such vehicle be equipped with
directional or turn signals showing to the front and rear, for the
purpose of indicating an intention to turn either to the right or left.
Such lamps showing to the front shall be located on the same level
and as widely spaced laterally as practicable and when in use shall
display a white or amber light, or any shade of color between white
or amber, visible from a distance of not less than 100 feet to the
front in normal sunlight, and the lamps showing to the rear shall
be located at the same level and as widely spaced laterally as prac-
ticable and when in use shall display a red or amber light, or any
shade of color between red and amber, visible from a distance of not
less than 100 feet to the rear in normal sunlight, both front and rear
lamps shall not project a glaring or dazzling light. When actuated
such lamps shall indicate the intended direction of turning by flashing
the lights showing to the front and rear on the side toward which the
turn is made.

Stop signals need be visible only from the rear except in the case
of School Buses provided for in Section 257 of this Article.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1961.
