AN ACT to repeal Section 57 of Article 19 of the Code of Public
Local Laws of Maryland (1930 Edition), title "St. Mary's County",
sub-title "County Commissioners", as said section was enacted by
Laws of Maryland 1957, Chapter 533, and to enact new Section 57
in lieu thereof to stand in the place and stead of the section so
repealed, creating a St. Mary's County Economic Development
Commission, providing for its powers and duties and matters inci-
dent thereto, and relating generally to economic development in
St. Mary's County.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 57 of Article 19 of the Code of Public Local Laws
of Maryland (1930 Edition), title "St. Mary's County", sub-title
"County Commissioners", as said section was enacted by laws of
Maryland 1957, Chapter 533, be and it is hereby repealed, and that
a new Section 57 be and it is hereby enacted in lieu thereof to stand
in the place and stead of the section so repealed, and to read as
follows:
57.
(a) The Economic Development Commission of St. Mary's County
is hereby created for the purpose of advancing the general welfare of
the people through programs and activities to develop St. Mary's
County's natural resources and economic opportunities pertaining to
commerce, agriculture, forestry, transportation, travel, tourism and
recreation, and to cooperate and offer assistance to existing indus-
tries and businesses, and to promote and encourage the establishing
and locating of new industries and businesses in St. Mary's County
and other matters intended to foster and develop gainful employment
and the pursuit of happiness of all who are now or may hereafter be
residents of St. Mary's County.
(b) The commission shall consist of not less than seven nor more
than eleven members, who shall be appointed by the Board of County
Commissioners. The members shall represent a cross section of the
economic composition of the county and shall be selected because of
their known experience and interest in the development of the
county. Those organizations representing the same categoric interest
shall jointly send to the county commissioners a list of not less than
two nor more than three names of persons duly qualified and inter-
ested in serving on the commission. There shall be on the commis-
sion one member chosen from each of the following categories: Agri-
culture, banking, contracting, real estate and retailing, and two from
the public at large. The county commissioners shall not select any
person not on a list submitted by interested organizations except for
the two positions representing the public at large. The public at large
positions on the commission can be made by any resident of the
county by submitting in writing to the county commissioners nomi-
